The opening ceremony was attended by the President of Castilla la Mancha, Emiliano García-Page, who was accompanied by the Mayor of Tarancon, José M. López Carrizo, the Vice President of the Regional Government, José Luis Martínez Guijarro, the Regional Minister of Agriculture, Francisco Martínez Arroyo, the President of the Provincial Council, Benjamín Prieto, Civil Guard Captain Alejandro Rodrigo, in addition to numerous regional, provincial and local authorities. Page, who was met at the gates of the meat producing enterprise by the company´s president Emilio Loriente, was given a tour of the new facilities and unveiled a plaque on the premises. Everyone then moved on to the Essentia restaurant in Tarancon, at which the formal ceremony took place.

The first person to speak was Clemente Loriente, the company´s CEO, who thanked everyone for their presence and said “we are opening our new facility today, a pig slaughterhouse involving an investment of almost 40 million euros, with a capacity to slaughter between 10,500 and 11,000 pigs a day at full performance over two shifts, for which we estimate a period of 5 years, and we hope that this will be sooner rather than later”. Our current capacity stands at 32,000 pigs a week, and this volume is expected to increase to 70,000 pigs a week, which will result in the creation of a further 500 jobs when we are at full capacity, to add to the 2,100 direct and 850 indirect jobs currently held at the plant.

The meat produced needs to be placed on the market, and as such Loriente pointed out that “we hope that our great partner, which is and always has been Mercadona, will consume a major part of this production, and any surplus will be exported. We are active in thriving global international markets such as South Korea, Japan, Hong Kong, the Philippines and the European Union of course, and we hope to include China in the very near future”. To this end, as already mentioned, we will need sufficient raw material to ensure the necessary volume of supply to this slaughterhouse, and with this in mind a partnership has been entered into with the Soria cooperative, experts in livestock farming, geared to the development of a livestock hub in the Tarancon area to serve as a source of supply over the next few years. These farms will create wealth and employment in Tarancon and the surrounding region.

He extended his gratitude to all Incarlopsa´s workers, “from the first to the last, which may seem like a cliché, but we are convinced that although people have always been important they are far more important today, and we therefore we thank our grassroots workers, middle managers and, of course, the management committee, all of whom strive to guarantee the trust of our consumers on a daily basis”. Clemente Loriente stressed that “local, provincial and regional governments are always on our side. At a time when politicians are so reviled, we would like to stand up for them, and that is more than enough as this has not always been the case, reason for which we would like to thank them for their awareness and for treating entrepreneurs in the manner they need”.

Moreover, on behalf of his cousins’ family, he also thanked his father and uncles for what the first generation did for them, “the values they constantly instilled in us over the years, values such as humility, seriousness and our inner daily commitment”.

New drying plant

He also announced that the Incarlopsa board of directors has decided to build a new ham drying plant at the Senda de los Pastores Industrial Park, involving an initial investment of 23 million euros and a capacity of 560,000 pieces of ham, and that if “we manage to keep the trust of Mercadona and our clients, we will execute a second and a third phase with a capacity for 1,600,000 pieces of ham, resulting in a final investment of 38 million euros”. This new ham drying plant is expected to be concluded in around eighteen months.

In turn, the mayor of Tarancon, José M. López Carrizo, defined the day as very exciting, recalling “who, 40 years ago, when I was just a little boy playing in the Congo neighbourhood with Clemente, Ascen, Montse and Julián under the close supervision of Juli, or going to the Lorientes store with my mother, would have imagined me having the privilege of being alongside the Loriente family at the opening of these facilities, and doing it, no less, as the mayor of my town. This shows how private companies progress faster than the regional government, but bear in mind that I will work day and night and on Saturdays and Sundays if necessary to ensure that Incarlopsa and the region´s other business enterprises suffer no delays in their projects due to the town council”.

Perimeter Water Ring Main

The mayor also announced that the Girasol Water Board has given the go-ahead for the perimeter water ring main and the Santa Marina reservoir, as well as the green light for nanofiltration or reverse osmosis system in Almoguera. This infrastructure “is necessary for the development of this region and has been ready since 2010”. He underlined the need for this liquid, water, and criticised the unfair and sectarian distribution thereof by the central government, while highlighting the progress of the joint efforts of Iberdrola, the Community Council and the Town Council with regard to the Senda de los Pastores substation.

He also announced that this Thursday´s ordinary meeting will submit for approval the naming of a street after the Loriente Piqueras family, an initiative generated by the meat producer´s committee, and congratulated the company´s workers for their continuous engagement, effort and daily commitment. He also congratulated the Loriente Piqueras family and guaranteed his availability for anything they might need. Finally, he reminded the regional authorities that he will continue to insist on asking for everything the region´s companies need, “and I hope I´m not being too pushy, but that is what I´ve promised my fellow countrymen”.

After welcoming everyone, the president of the Provincial Council, Benjamín Prieto, described the occasion as “a great day for the town, province and region, as Incarlopsa, a company with an accredited track record both in and beyond our province, based on values, principles and effort, is yet another feather in our province´s cap”. He recalled how the meat producing enterprise has introduced quality by nature to the four corners of Spain, as this is precisely what the company strives for: quality and excellence on a day-to-day basis, which is passed on from generation to generation and to society itself. Everyone here in Cuenca is proud of you”. He defined meat as one of the province´s benchmark products and expressed his desire for the company´s meat to gain popularity throughout Spain and abroad “because you now need to find somewhere to sell all this meat, but I´m sure that with the combination of your expertise and Mercadona you will manage it.

Finally, the president of Castilla La Mancha, Emiliano García-Page, said that the mayor’s words “referring to his childhood show that this is not any old opening ceremony, as we are not dealing with any old company, but rather a company among those with the greatest capacity for the generation of self-esteem and pride in Castilla La Mancha”. As far as Page is concerned, we are not opening just another industrial plant, but “the most modern and advanced facility in the world. Moreover, they are not satisfied with the opening of this plant, as they are already due to announce their next investment, and so it is with personal and institutional admiration that I hope many other companies in Spain will react with the same level of requirements for resounding concern, and certainly with the same degree of local patriotism shown by Incarlopsa”. He then thanked them for what they do on behalf of the institution he represents.

Page declared that the King and Queen of Spain would have been in Tarancon had it not been for the ceremony held in the house of deputies to commemorate 40 years of democracy. “We know they were intending to attend this exemplary ceremony for both the Spanish and our own economy, however the clash of circumstances has meant they were unable to join us today, but the level of the event here was certainly conducive to their presence”.
